RECYCLING SERVICES

Recycling is important for us as individuals, and a collective. Not only does recycling help keep our planet more sustainable, but it can also be an effective way of generating some income.

An important part of waste management is identifying which waste can be recycled and how to recycle it. Eco Eye Waste Management recycles plastic, cardboard, paper, metal, wood and glass.

Organic and food material sorted out of the waste stream could be used to produce energy from waste and eventually produce a rich organic compost for farm land soil enrichment

Examples of recycling we do

Compositing: 70% of total food waste and green materials can be recovered. Compost is delivered in usable bags to vendors and can also be converted into electricity or methane-rich biogas to create electricity, heat or fuel.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF): residual waste can also be converted into fuel. RDF can be used to power on-site machinery such as power plants, cement kilns, industry boilers, and even gasification facilities

Switched on to electronic waste solutions

E-waste has been identified as one of the fastest growing waste streams in South Africa. Many electronic items, such as computer monitors, contain valuable materials such as gold, platinum and indium, but also hazardous materials such as mercury, cadmium and lead.

When these items end up in a landfill the toxic materials can leach into the surrounding environment and poison the groundwater. Moreover, the valuable finite metals that could have been extracted and recycled would also be forever lost.

Recycling involves the complete destruction of electronic devices to reduce the need to mine for these valuable finite metals.

Ensuring your safety

If an unwanted product runs on electricity, requires a battery or an electric cable, it is e-waste.

EcoEye Waste Management, an accredited member of the Institute of Waste management of South Africa, has a network of permitted treatment and disposal sites for e-waste.

Fluorescent lamp Recycling

Did you know that a single fluorescent tube contains enough mercury to contaminate 30 000 litres of water?

As of 23 August 2016, no Hazardous Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Lamps in any form will be accepted at landfill cording to NEMWA-Act no.59 of 2008 (Government Gazette, No.10008, Volume 578, No. 36784, dated 23 August 2013, page 44). Chapter 2, point 5 (waste disposal restrictions)

The ban on Hazardous Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Lamps to landfill includes all fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs).

We have offered recycling of fluorescent tubes and other lamps since 2014 via our ORIPACK collection system.

Recycling of fluorescent tubes and lamps provides a total environmental solution, because it allows for the recovery of all fractions of the lamps and tubes.

Recycled fractions of lamps and tubes includes glass, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastic, mercury and phosphor powder which can all be recovered and used in suitable end processes and products.
